Privacy, in plain English.

The short version

We read your bill for rates, usage, and location. We never ask for your name or account number, and email is optional. If you do give us your email to send your result, we keep it, but never spam you and never sell it. No account required, and you can unsubscribe anytime.

What we collect and why

When you upload a bill, we extract only the fields needed to run a comparison. We use your bill only to work out your location, usage and rates, and never store identifying details like your name, street address, or account number. We store the extracted data (not the original file) alongside a quality score so we can improve extraction accuracy. The data cannot be linked back to you.

If you email a bill to [email protected], or ask us to email your results, we use your address to send you your comparison and we keep it on file. We use it only to send and re-send your result and, later, to send the occasional review invite. We never run broad marketing campaigns, never sell your address, and never pass it to anyone else. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe, and you can opt out anytime. If you use the contact form, we collect your name, email, and message to respond, and do not use these for marketing.

Third-party services

We use a small number of third-party services to operate BillSense:

Anthropic reads your bill file to extract the comparison data. Anthropic processes the file under their privacy terms and does not retain it for training under their API usage policy.

Supabase stores extracted bill data and comparison results. Data is held on infrastructure in Australia and the United States.

Google Analytics collects anonymised usage data (pages visited, session duration, approximate location). No bill content is shared with Google.

Resend sends transactional emails (results and contact replies) on our behalf.

Plan comparison data is fetched live from the government's public energy plan registry and is not stored by us.

Referrals

If you click through to an energy retailer, we record which retailer and plan you clicked on and your estimated saving. We do not pass any personal information to retailers. If a retailer has agreed to pay us a referral fee, we may receive a payment. This does not affect ranking, we always sort by your estimated saving, highest first.

Your email address

We store your email address only if you ask us to email your result (from the results page, the popup, or by emailing a bill to [email protected]). You can use BillSense start to finish without ever giving us your email.

When you do, we keep it so we can send and re-send your comparison and, later, send the occasional invitation to leave a review. That is all we use it for. We never sell or share your email, and we never add it to broad marketing lists. Every email we send carries a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time, which stops all future emails.

Data retention

Extracted bill data is retained while it's useful for improving our service. You can request deletion at any time by contacting us with enough detail to identify your record (retailer, state, approximate upload date). We will delete it promptly.

Your rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of any personal information we hold about you. Because we don't collect your name or account details on a standard upload, identifying a specific record may need a few details from you. Contact us and we'll help.
